Transforming the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Digital Presence with a Centralized, Scalable and Unified Web Platform

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization that has been dedicated to finding cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis since 1967. The Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life of over 1.2 million patients and their caregivers annually through education, support and advocacy programs. However, its existing, non-scalable CMS presented numerous challenges, including slow turnaround times for campaign landing pages, high dependency on developers and limited visibility to manage duplicate content across siloed microsites. These issues led to branding inconsistencies and fragmented digital experiences.

To overcome these issues, the Foundation knew it was time to modernize its digital presence. It approached Material with the goal of creating a cohesive, user-friendly strategy that would establish brand consistency and simplify workflows for content editors.

  • Automated content migration using Drupal’s migration API to enable fast and efficient content transfer.

  • Introduced user-based access controls, allowing various stakeholders to manage content uniformly and seamlessly across sites.

  • Integrated Google schema tags and SEO best practices to enhance visibility, resulting in improved organic performance and higher search rankings.

  • Optimized site performance through Varnish and Cloudflare, achieving faster response times with low latency.

  • Enabled resource monitoring and rapid issue resolution by leveraging the Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana (ELK) stack.

Our work with the Foundation didn’t just make their digital presence more cohesive—it transformed how they connect with their community. By simplifying the website’s code and improving content recommendations, we significantly boosted user interaction and search engine rankings. Pages per session on one of the microsites doubled, while the bounce rate dropped by 24% year-over-year. Maintenance costs fell as the new platform now scales seamlessly, even as the Foundation continues to expand its digital projects. By consolidating CMS licenses, we were able to reduce costs and streamline content management, making it easier for its team to work efficiently. With the introduction of reusable components and optimized workflows, content editors can now publish faster across all microsites.

With a centralized, scalable and unified web platform, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation can now communicate its mission more effectively, reaching a broader audience and empowering its community with a consistent and engaging digital experience.
