Performing Seamless Cloud Migration of Critical Telecom Applications

Our client, a leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines, faced a time-sensitive challenge in migrating essential workloads to a new data center before their existing hardware reached the end of its support lifecycle. The data center handled critical Tier 1 workloads, including a custom phone recharge app, reloading applications and a variety of technology solutions. These included bespoke applications (Java), commercial off-the-shelf software such as Kafka, Redis and Postgres, a Data Security Platform (SECUPI) and an Enterprise Service Bus (Dell Boomi). Recognizing the complexity of migrating such diverse workloads, the client engaged Material’s expertise to ensure an efficient, risk-mitigated transition to a new, cloud-enabled data center with minimal downtime.
  • Collaborated with the data center equipment manufacturer to design, plan and size the new cloud enabled infrastructure

  • Developed a comprehensive network plan ensuring robust connectivity and micro-segmentation

  • Crafted a tailored cloud migration strategy, including a risk assessment to mitigate potential disruptions

  • Migrated Tier 1 telco workloads seamlessly using Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (integrated) as the cloud-native container management platform

  • Deployed NSX-T micro-segmentation to isolate networks across business units

  • Implemented Tanzu Kubernetes Grid across two data centers, enabling failover capabilities and operational resilience

  • Integrated Splunk for centralized logging, Gremlin for chaos testing and Tanzu Observability for monitoring Kubernetes clusters and virtual machines

Over a six-month period, the client successfully migrated their critical Tier 1 workloads to a new cloud enabled data center with minimal downtime, achieving a seamless transition with no disruption to essential services. Material delivered a cloud-native application platform utilizing Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, allowing for scalable and reliable container management across two data centers, complete with failover capabilities. The multi-tenant architecture, enhanced with NSX-T based micro-segmentation and robust observability integrations, provided the client with improved resilience, visibility and risk management for their business operations.  Material’s carefully structured timeline and execution strategy ensured a successful transition to a cloud-enabled data center, balancing risk mitigation with uninterrupted operations of essential workloads.
